Recently, the Huawei Xinsheng Community disclosed the minutes of a discussion between Huawei Chairman Guo Ping and new employees. Talking about its business layout in the artificial intelligence era, Guo Ping said that Huawei regards artificial intelligence as one of its biggest opportunities. Huawei's goal in the ICT and computing business is to become "NVIDIA". The core is not to have self-developed large models, but to support customers in building excellent large models, so that any large model in the world can run efficiently on Huawei Ascend, Kunpeng, super nodes and clusters.
In this discussion, Guo Ping also talked about Huawei's future business boundaries, AI talents, and chip competitiveness.
Guo Ping said that facing the future, Huawei's core strategy is to "focus" and continue to delve into the fields of connectivity and computing. "There is no business expansion plan." In his view, what Huawei really needs to focus on is not the external environment, but its own capabilities, that is, whether it can provide competitive products and services and create value for customers.
How AI can enter traditional business was also a topic during the discussion. Taking operator networks as an example, Guo Ping said that from 2G to 5G and even future networks, network elements are complex and diverse, and operation and maintenance costs are high. In the future, it is necessary to explore the use of artificial intelligence to realize automatic network operation and maintenance, which requires applied AI talents.
In terms of large models, Huawei has not taken exactly the same route. Guo Ping said that for the ICT and computing business, it is more important to help customers build excellent large models; for terminal and intelligent driving businesses, it is best to have self-developed large models; Huawei Cloud must have competitive self-developed large models because cloud and artificial intelligence are deeply integrated.
When it comes to the basis of AI competition, Guo Ping regards computing power, data and talent as three key elements. He believes that China is relatively lagging behind in terms of computing power, but has advantages in data applications and industrial scenarios, and the two sides are basically equal in terms of talent. He hopes to rely on talents and a good development environment to promote Huawei to establish advantages in the field of artificial intelligence.
Chip is still another competition for Huawei to "exploit its strengths and avoid its weaknesses."
Guo Ping said that Huawei is constrained by advanced processes and needs to promote the integration of design and manufacturing to make up for its process deficiencies through comprehensive advantages. He mentioned the "Tao's Law" proposed by He Tingbo, believing that its essence is to replace "geometric shrinkage" with "time shrinkage", to more closely integrate separate processes and manufacturing, and to enhance competitiveness under constrained conditions.
Talking about the Ascend 950 series, Guo Ping said that Huawei hopes to narrow the gap with competitors through architectural innovation. The key is not to simply pile up parameters, but to provide customer experience and solve practical problems. Gaining overall advantages through clusters and super nodes is also Huawei's practice of "leveraging strengths and avoiding weaknesses."
Guo Ping also said that artificial intelligence may be the last technological revolution in human society. Huawei needs to gain a competitive advantage in this technological revolution, so its organization, processes, capabilities and talents need to match it.
In his view, in the AI era, humans and artificial intelligence have no advantage in comparing standard answers. What is more important is the ability to accurately describe problems, continue to ask questions, and solve practical problems. At the same time, the ability to continue learning is still a basic ability for survival and development in the workplace.
