Apple launches first touchscreen MacBook Pro, breaking the tradition of Steve Jobs era

📅 2026-10-29

Abstract:

About 20 years after rejecting the touch-screen Mac concept, Apple has released a completely revised MacBook Pro. The addition of a touch screen for the first time gives this flagship laptop a feature that has become an important configuration in the personal computer industry.

The new MacBook Pro is available in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, with a thinner body and significantly lighter weight. This is the first Mac to use an OLED display. The display technology has been used in iPhones, iPads and other Apple devices in recent years. The new machine also adds Smart Island, which is familiar to iPhone users, to Mac for the first time.

The new computer has a redesigned user interface to optimize touch operations and is equipped with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. The 14-inch version starts at $2,899, and the 16-inch version starts at $3,399.

Johny Srouji, Apple's chief hardware officer, called the new MacBook Pro "a milestone step forward for Mac." New CEO John Ternus took the stage to introduce the product at the press conference.

Co-founder Steve Jobs publicly criticized the touch-screen Mac later in his career, once calling the design "ergonomically terrible." His successor, Cook, said that combining a laptop and a tablet is like combining a refrigerator and a toaster. Other Apple executives have also scoffed at the idea in interviews.

However, according to previous reports, about four years ago, Cook and Ternus began to support breaking past tradition and adding a touch screen to the MacBook Pro. Apple hopes to inject new impetus into the Mac business and increase revenue by adding high-end features and raising prices.
