Abstract:
Apple has officially opened the first batch of application development and testing tools for iPhone Duo to developers. With the launch of the first beta version of Xcode 27.1, developers can finally begin to fully adapt to Apple's first foldable screen phone. However, there is only about a month left before the product is officially launched, which also makes the application ecosystem face a relatively tight preparation cycle.

On Friday local time, Apple released Xcode 27.1 Beta 1, providing developers with a development environment that supports iPhone Duo. With the new version of the tool, developers can test the performance of their applications on various screen shapes and display modes of foldable screen devices in the coming weeks.
Xcode 27.1 integrates Swift 6.4 and provides software development kits (SDKs) for iOS 27.1, iPadOS 27.1 and other Apple operating systems. At the same time, Apple has also added development functions specifically for iPhone Duo to help development teams evaluate the compatibility and user experience of applications on folding screen devices.
In the new version of Xcode, developers can preview the rendering effect of the application on another display area of the device through the new Display group in the Canvas interface. Since iPhone Duo can switch between screen layouts of different sizes and orientations, this feature is particularly important for interface design and interaction adaptation.
This beta version also provides an iPhone Duo simulator running environment, but there are still some limitations. Apple mentioned in the release notes that the StandBy feature is temporarily unavailable, and most App extensions currently do not support running and debugging. Additionally, launching the emulator for the first time may take several minutes to load.
The background of these restrictions is that developers are facing a greatly compressed adaptation cycle. Although most applications developed according to existing specifications can theoretically run normally on iPhone Duo, developers still need to use Xcode 27.1 to verify and optimize various interface layouts for the new device.
As Apple’s first foldable screen phone, iPhone Duo introduces more screen orientations, display sizes, and diverse display configurations. Developers not only need to ensure that applications can adapt to these new forms, but also make full use of the exclusive functions and interactive capabilities brought by folding screen hardware through the new API interface provided by Apple.
It is worth noting that developers only received these testing tools after Apple officially announced the iPhone Duo. This means that the time between getting the tools and bringing the product to market is extremely limited, requiring development teams to test, tweak, and release within a short period of time.
Apps that are not specifically optimized are expected to still run on iPhone Duo, but the interface may not fully utilize the available display space and provide the experience expected on a foldable device. Some large software manufacturers, including Adobe and Microsoft, may also be unable to complete the update immediately due to the complexity of the adaptation work.
According to Apple’s announced plan, iPhone Duo will be available for pre-order on October 16th and will be officially launched on October 23rd. Since it is difficult for some applications to support folding screens, it is expected that some applications will not be optimized for iPhone Duo in the early stages of product launch.
