Apple opens subscription cancellation retention message, developers can display offers before users unsubscribe

📅 2026-11-05

Abstract:

Apple has launched the App Store subscription retention message function, which allows developers to display retention content when users enter the cancellation process, remind users of the value of their subscription, or provide special offers. Messages can contain text, images, or offers, with the goal of giving users reasons to continue subscribing before confirming cancellation.

Developers can set retained messages for auto-renewal subscriptions in App Store Connect, and choose which subscriber users are eligible to see it, as well as the waiting time between two messages.

In other words, users with different subscription statuses can receive different content, and developers can also control the frequency of prompts.

Apple also provides an independent Retention Messaging API, allowing developers to choose which message to display based on the user's subscription details; the API currently requires application. This feature became available on November 4th.
