Apple expects to double MacBook Neo shipments in 2027, with second-generation model order target reaching 16 million units

Abstract:

Apple’s affordable laptop MacBook Neo has achieved market performance that exceeded expectations after its launch, and now Apple seems to be preparing to further expand the scale of this product line. According to supply chain news, Apple has provided component suppliers with shipment forecasts for the second-generation MacBook Neo. It expects full-year shipments in 2027 to reach 16 million units, approximately twice the expected shipments of the first-generation product in 2026.

Taiwanese technology media DigiTimes reported that data provided by Apple to the supply chain shows that the first-generation MacBook Neo is expected to ship approximately 8 million units in 2026, while the target for the second-generation product in 2027 has been increased to 16 million units. This means that Apple is quite optimistic about the market prospects of this entry-level notebook computer, hoping to gradually develop it from a supplementary product into an important source of sales for the Mac product line.

However, these two figures cannot be simply understood to mean that Apple expects the average monthly sales of the second-generation product to double. The first-generation MacBook Neo was released in early March 2026. The 8 million unit forecast in 2026 only covers about 10 months, while the 16 million unit target for the second-generation product corresponds to the full year of 2027. Therefore, the actual growth rate needs to be judged based on the time to market and the annual sales cycle.

The success of MacBook Neo stems largely from its relatively low price. The first-generation product starts at $599 in the US market, and educational users can even purchase it for $499. It uses Apple's A18 Pro processor instead of the M-series chip used in traditional MacBooks. By introducing the iPhone processor to the Mac platform, Apple has successfully reduced the hardware cost of entry-level Macs.

This strategy also makes MacBook Neo Apple’s cheapest MacBook to date. For consumers who have previously mainly used Windows laptops but want to enter the Apple ecosystem, the price threshold has been significantly lowered.

Former Apple CEO Tim Cook previously stated that the market response of MacBook Neo exceeded the company’s expectations and created the best initial sales record for Mac products for first-time Mac users. As demand quickly exceeded supply capacity, Apple had to increase the production target of the first-generation product from the initial 5 million to 6 million units to about 10 million units in May this year.

Data from market research firm IDC also shows that MacBook Neo has helped Apple maintain good shipment performance despite the overall slowdown in the global PC market. Apple's global PC shipments increased 13% year-on-year in the second quarter, with performance driven by this entry-level laptop.

The second-generation MacBook Neo is expected to be launched in the first half of 2027. Current supply chain rumors indicate that the new machine may use the A19 processor and increase the memory capacity to 12GB. Compared with the first-generation product's A18 Pro chip and 8GB of memory, these changes are expected to improve multitasking capabilities and performance when running more complex applications.

In addition, Apple may also add new body colors to the second-generation model to further strengthen its youthful and personalized positioning. The first-generation MacBook Neo already offers silver, blush, citrus and indigo options. The rich colors are also one of the important features that distinguish this product from traditional business notebooks.

It is worth noting that Apple has set such a high shipment target for the second-generation product, which also means that MacBook Neo is taking on a more important market task. In the past, MacBook Air was mainly responsible for entry-level and mainstream consumer demand in the Apple laptop market, while MacBook Neo further expanded into the Windows laptop market through lower prices.

If the shipment target of 16 million units is finally achieved, MacBook Neo will likely become one of Apple's largest-selling notebook series. However, this number is still a supply chain forecast and is not Apple's officially announced sales target.

From a product strategy perspective, Apple clearly hopes to form a clearer product stratification through A-series processors and M-series processors: the A-series is responsible for the price-sensitive market, while the M-series continues to serve users with higher requirements for performance, professional applications, and high-end experience. The success of MacBook Neo may mean that Apple is redefining the entry barrier for the Mac product line.
