Abstract:
When Apple unveiled its new Mac Studio last week powered by the M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips, it initially said in a press release that the computers featured "a new generation of solid-state drive architecture built on PCIe Gen 6." However, French blog MacGeneration discovered that Apple removed the statement about PCIe 6.0 from the press release shortly after it was released.
Currently, the press release still retains the description of the "new generation solid-state drive architecture" and claims that the storage speed can be up to twice that of the previous generation, but no longer mentions PCIe 6.0. Apple has not yet responded to a request for comment, but as things stand, this is likely just an error in the press release, as the new Mac Studio is more likely to support the PCIe 5.0 standard.
First of all, the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro equipped with the same M5 Max chip have adopted PCIe 5.0 solid-state drives. Apple also claims that the speed of these notebooks’ solid-state drives can be increased to up to twice that of the previous generation. Secondly, there are currently no consumer computers on the market that feature PCIe 6.0-capable SSDs.
Although the M5 Ultra chip is a brand new product, it is likely that it will also support PCIe 5.0, otherwise Apple would not have to modify the Mac Studio press release.
Taken together, the new Mac Studio seems to support PCIe 5.0, not PCIe 6.0.
