Democratic lawmakers demand Apple release details of Trump White House ballroom donation

📅 2026-11-06

Abstract:

Apple in the United States is facing a new round of questions from congressional Democrats. The reason is that a previously exposed donation list showed that Apple had promised to provide US$25 million in financial support for the White House Ballroom project promoted by US President Donald Trump. This news immediately triggered discussions about the transparency of corporate political donations and potential conflicts of interest.

According to previously disclosed internal fundraising records, Apple and Nvidia have both pledged to donate US$25 million to the White House Ballroom construction project, making them one of the largest known donors. Relevant documents show that the project has received more than $330 million in private commitments, with donors including a number of large technology companies and companies that do business with the federal government. Although Trump himself has stated that he will participate in project funding, he has not appeared on the publicly circulated donation list.

In response to this situation, many Democratic lawmakers asked Apple to disclose more information to investors and the public, including the donation decision-making process, the role of the board of directors in it, the source of funds, and whether the company has assessed the business and reputational risks that related donations may bring.

Critics believe that when large technology companies provide huge funds to projects directly related to the president, the public needs to understand the decision-making basis behind these funds and whether there is the possibility of affecting government policy, fair competition, or regulatory decisions. They pointed out that companies such as Apple have important interests in the U.S. government in antitrust review, trade policy, government procurement and other federal affairs, so donations should be subject to a higher degree of transparency review.

The Democratic Party also stated that when listed companies provide large amounts of funds to politically related projects, investors should understand the use and expected impact of the funds in order to evaluate whether relevant decisions are in the interests of shareholders.

Currently, Apple has not publicly stated the specific background of its $25 million donation. Apple declined to comment on the matter after the relevant donation information was exposed. The White House defended the related fundraising activities, saying that supporters came from many American companies and individuals, and believed that if taxpayers bear the entire construction cost, it will also trigger criticism.

At the same time, the Trump administration criticized outside doubts about the project as political hype and expressed dissatisfaction with the leakage of donation information. A White House spokesperson previously emphasized that the relevant projects mainly rely on private funds for construction rather than federal expenditures.

However, as the donation list was exposed and many large technology companies were involved in the discussion, the controversy surrounding the White House Ballroom project continues to ferment. Democratic lawmakers hope to learn more about Apple's entire process of participating in the project through information disclosure requirements, and this incident has once again triggered widespread discussions on issues such as political-business relations in the United States, the transparency of corporate political donations, and the influence of the technology industry.
