Euro-Office, the European office suite that focuses on "digital sovereignty" and localized software ecology, is about to undergo an important upgrade. Developer Nextcloud recently announced that Euro-Office will launch a dedicated desktop client in the next few weeks, covering Windows, Linux and macOS platforms, thus filling in an important link that has been missing since the project was released.
Euro-Office was officially launched earlier this year. It was jointly developed by Nextcloud, IONOS, Open-Xchange, Office.eu and other European companies and organizations, and is positioned as a European alternative to Microsoft Office. The project emphasizes open source, data sovereignty and reducing European institutions' dependence on non-European software suppliers, hoping to provide localized office solutions for government departments, enterprises and individual users.
However, during the initial release stage, Euro-Office mainly ran in a browser, and users needed to access and edit documents through web pages. Nextcloud then integrated it into the Nextcloud Office platform, allowing users to process documents, forms and presentation files directly in the Nextcloud server, but the overall experience is still web-centric.
With the upcoming desktop client, Euro-Office will have a local application form similar to traditional office software for the first time. In the future, users will be able to edit documents directly on their personal computers while maintaining a connection to the Nextcloud platform to achieve file synchronization and collaborative work.
Nextcloud says this update will fill one of the last important gaps between Euro-Office and Microsoft Office. For a large number of users who are accustomed to installing office software locally, the desktop version will bring a more familiar way of use and reduce dependence on the browser environment.
According to the information currently released, the new version of the client supports word processing, spreadsheets and presentation editing, and can also be linked with Nextcloud instances. Even when offline, users can continue working on files locally and automatically sync content and participate in multi-person collaboration when the network is restored.
In addition to launching the desktop client, Nextcloud has also optimized the overall performance of Euro-Office. The new version improves the file filtering mechanism and document thumbnail function, making it easier for users to find target files and quickly open them for processing.
From a technical perspective, Euro-Office is actually built on OnlyOffice code. When the project was launched this year, related practices sparked a series of public controversies. Some industry insiders have questioned its brand positioning and development direction, and the Document Foundation behind LibreOffice has also criticized Euro-Office for placing too much emphasis on Microsoft OOXML format compatibility instead of using the Open Document Format ODF as the default standard.
Facing these debates, the Euro-Office development team believes that supporting Microsoft file formats such as DOCX, XLSX and PPTX is an important prerequisite for promoting the migration of public institutions and enterprises, because most users' existing office environments are still built around these formats.
Meanwhile, project development continues to expand. Institutions including Tuta, a privacy-focused European email service provider, have joined the development effort and contributed code and functional improvements to the project. This also further strengthens the European Software Alliance behind Euro-Office.
Currently, many European countries are promoting digital sovereignty strategies to reduce their dependence on the products of overseas technology giants. In Germany, France and at some local government levels, more and more institutions are beginning to evaluate open source software and local technology solutions. In this context, Euro-Office is regarded as an important attempt to automate European office software.
According to the schedule announced by Nextcloud, the Euro-Office desktop version is expected to be available for download in the next few weeks. As Windows, macOS and Linux clients are launched one after another, this European office suite, which was originally limited to the browser environment, will officially enter a new stage of direct competition with Microsoft Office.
