Abstract:
The game decompilation community platform decomp.dev announced its closure and linked this decision to the impact of recent AI models on decompilation work. The platform believes that although AI has improved work efficiency, it has also destroyed the original collaborative nature of the decompilation community.

decomp.dev was founded in 2024 and mainly serves communities related to game mods, porting, patches and translation. Decompilation requires dismantling and re-understanding the code structure of the game. After enthusiasts complete the relevant work, they can make modules, ported versions or patches accordingly.
In its farewell statement, the platform said that with the right guidance, human input and code review, AI can significantly speed up the decompilation process. Recently, some Opus and GPT models have performed outstandingly on related tasks, and participants with sufficient quota can produce results faster.
decomp.dev also believes that this change has brought more "passing contributions" and the atmosphere of joint research, discussion and long-term collaboration has been diluted. As participation methods gradually shift towards personalization and instantaneity, the significance of continuing to maintain such community platforms also decreases.
This statement does not completely deny AI tools, but focuses on how communities of interest maintain common practices. The closure of the platform shows that increased efficiency does not automatically lead to healthier collaboration mechanisms. Generative AI is also changing the way communities of technology enthusiasts such as game savers and modders are organized.
