General Motors injects AI into OnStar to move from in-car call center to intelligent assistant platform

📅 2026-10-22

Abstract:

General Motors announced a comprehensive upgrade of its 30-year-old OnStar Internet of Vehicles service and officially introduced artificial intelligence assistants, hoping to build this traditional safety and roadside assistance service into a new generation of smart travel platform.

According to information released by General Motors, the new OnStar AI Assistant will be first installed on the upcoming 2027 Cadillac Lyriq electric vehicle, and will gradually be expanded to more General Motors brand models in the future. At the same time, the company plans to launch a new version of the OnStar mobile application in 2027 to achieve deep synchronization and linkage with the vehicle system.

The new OnStar app will replace the existing OnStar Guardian app and the independent mobile clients for Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC brands to form a unified software ecosystem.

Compared with the past several functional upgrades, the biggest change in this transformation is that artificial intelligence has become the core. General Motors hopes to use AI with autonomous execution capabilities to make OnStar no longer just a service platform for help after a vehicle accident, but a digital assistant that can continuously understand user needs and proactively provide suggestions and help.

In recent years, General Motors has been promoting the intelligent transformation of OnStar. In 2021, the company will expand its OnStar Guardian service with collision detection, emergency assistance and location sharing capabilities to all compatible smartphone users, even if they are not GM owners. In 2022, General Motors began to use Google Cloud's Dialogflow conversational AI technology to process voice commands; in 2023, it further enhanced the system's capabilities to enable it to answer common questions such as navigation and route planning. These initiatives all serve the company's long-term goal of building a $25 billion subscription business by 2030.

Although General Motors has previously relied heavily on Google technology in the field of generative AI, and has announced that Google Gemini will enter the vehicle system in 2026, the OnStar AI Assistant released this time is a product independently developed by the company. The goal is to provide drivers and passengers with a more personalized and interactive experience and integrate more life scenes beyond daily travel.

General Motors Chief Product Officer Sterling Anderson said OnStar is transforming from a traditional call center into a "connected intelligence platform." In the future, it will not only be able to understand and analyze vehicle status, but also provide users with predictive and proactive support to help car owners respond to potential problems in advance.

As part of the upgrade, the vehicle camera system will also be deeply integrated with OnStar. In the future, users can use the software to view images outside the car in real time, while saving collision events and safety-related videos. When the vehicle senses that an abnormal situation may occur, such as an aggressive siren or other potentially risky event, the system can automatically activate the camera to record and upload the relevant video to the OnStar app.

In addition, users can also directly control in-car functions such as air conditioning through voice, and consult the AI assistant about various vehicle functions and settings. Through the combination of in-vehicle systems, mobile applications and artificial intelligence capabilities, General Motors hopes to upgrade OnStar from a single rescue service brand to a comprehensive intelligent service platform covering vehicles, travel and digital life.
