Abstract:
According to Search Engine Roundtable, Google will now automatically expand the AI summary at the top of the results page for some search requests. The change means users will need to scroll down longer to see the traditional list of web links.
In the past, only a partial AI overview was often displayed at the top of search results, along with a clickable "Show more" button. Now, when automatic expansion is triggered, Google will directly display a complete AI overview, and a "Ask Anything" input box will appear below, followed by a link to ordinary search results.
It is unclear what criteria Google will use to decide whether to automatically expand the AI overview. The author of the report said that he had seen this feature in most test searches conducted before writing the article, but then the AI overview usually reverted to only showing the beginning content and providing a "Show More" button. A more stable trigger is to search for "What are the best games on Switch 2?" However, even using this query cannot always be reproduced across different search times and browsers.
Google spokesperson Jennifer Kutz said that for certain queries, if the Google system determines that dynamically expanding content is most helpful to the user, the AI overview may automatically expand. She said that Google's research shows that under this dynamic experience, users find search more useful and are more willing to continue exploring.
If the user has started to scroll down to view the content below the AI overview, Google will cancel the expansion operation to prevent the user from losing the current reading position.
