Abstract:
Nowadays, the price of memory remains high, and the seemingly cheap second-hand products are also unreliable. Recently, an X platform user shared that the Kingston FURY series memory he purchased in the second-hand market was seriously counterfeited. The counterfeiters actually re-marked the DDR4 particles and welded them onto the DDR5 PCB.
According to the pictures published by the buyer, what he purchased was a Kingston FURY Beast DDR5-5600 32GB memory marked as not guaranteed, with the model number KF556C40BB-32-SP. The heat sink and anti-counterfeiting label of the memory were normal from the outside.
After the buyer disassembled the memory, he found that under the heat sink cover, the PCB of this memory was covered with obvious flux residue, and some PCB pads were idle, apparently after manual welding.
Although the chips soldered on the memory PCB have the exclusive FBGA code D8DDZ of Micron DDR5 chips, according to Micron’s official specifications, this code corresponds to a single DDR5 chip with a capacity of 16Gb (2GB), a frequency of 5600MHz, and an operating voltage of 1.1V.
There are also regular DDR5 memories using D8DDZ particles on the market. In other words, the silk screen logo on this fake chip is completely copied from a real DDR5 component.
However, by comparing the genuine BGA contact array, it was found that the number and position of the contacts of the memory particles were completely inconsistent with the DDR5 standard.
Through technical analysis, it was learned that the counterfeiters selected Micron DDR4 particles with the same package size of 9x11mm, polished the surface and re-laser-etched the DDR5 silk screen, forcibly welded them to the DDR5 PCB, and used a heat sink to cover the flaws.
At present, such counterfeit products are mostly found in blind boxes or non-returnable and non-replaceable parts on personal idle trading platforms. It is extremely difficult to distinguish the authenticity from the appearance alone.
