It is rumored that iPhone 20 still has hole-digging, smart island + four-curved design

Abstract:

Previous multiple sources revealed that Apple plans to skip the number 19 and directly release the iPhone 20 series in 2027 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the iPhone. This approach clearly followed the example of the iPhone X that year.

At that time, Apple skipped the iPhone 9 and launched the milestone model iPhone X, which brought major innovations such as full screen and Face ID. This number jump is also intended to highlight that iPhone 20 is a major upgrade rather than a regular iteration.

Revelation shows that the iPhone 20 series will use a four-curved screen, abandoning the straight-screen solution that it has always insisted on, and combining it with extremely narrow borders to create a visually borderless look. It is worth mentioning that it was previously reported that the iPhone 20 series will also adopt a true full-screen form, and Apple will place the Face ID component under the screen.

However, the latest news shows that the iPhone 20 series will continue the Smart Island solution of the iPhone 18 Pro. Some bloggers also posted what they claim is the screen glass cover of the iPhone 20, and the photos show that the hole punching still exists.

It is reported that Apple’s implementation of under-screen Face ID is much more difficult than under-screen camera technology. Face ID relies on a dot matrix projector to project tens of thousands of infrared light points, and the infrared lens reads the deformation of the light spots to generate a depth map of the face.

If this set of components is placed under the screen, Apple must increase the light transmittance of the OLED screen, which will cause screen door patterns on the screen and the potential for screen burn. Although the algorithm can compensate for optical distortion, it cannot completely offset the diffraction interference at the physical level and will also affect the look and feel of the screen.

In addition, problems such as identification security and mass production yield also need to be solved. Therefore, the iPhone 20 series may follow the 18 Pro solution and only hide some components under the screen.
