Abstract:
With the advancement of the next-generation macOS 17 beta version, Apple is further deepening its artificial intelligence layout. The latest system firmware analysis shows that the Apple Intelligence suite in macOS 17 will receive significant updates and expansions, and the space occupied by artificial intelligence models and related resource files on some Mac devices will surge to approximately 30GB.

Developers found in the latest macOS 17 code snippet that Apple has significantly upgraded the locally running large language model and image generation model in order to achieve more powerful end-side generative AI functions, more accurate cross-application understanding capabilities, and more natural multi-modal interactions. Since these high-precision models need to be stored in full on the local hard drive so that low-latency real-time computing services can be provided even without a network connection, the system's requirements for storage space have increased significantly.
The report pointed out that this storage occupation of up to 30GB does not treat all devices equally, but will be dynamically adjusted based on the unified memory (RAM) capacity and chip computing power level of the Mac device. Mac models equipped with large memory of 16GB or above and capable of smoothly running higher-parameter end-side models will automatically download and load the complete high-precision model package, occupying approximately 30GB of storage space. For Mac devices with basic configurations or early models, the system will allocate a streamlined version of the model, and the storage usage will be relatively reduced.
Faced with such huge storage consumption, many users have expressed concerns about the space pressure of entry-level models. Especially in the context of Apple's long-term introduction of 256GB basic storage configuration, the AI model alone consumes nearly one-eighth of the hard drive space, which may squeeze users' daily data and application storage.
Industry analysts say that the expansion of end-side AI models is an inevitable trend in the development of intelligent operating systems. In order to protect user privacy and offline computing experience, localizing huge model parameters has become a common choice for major technology giants. Apple’s comprehensive upgrade of the Apple Intelligence model in macOS 17 not only indicates that the new system will bring substantial breakthroughs in intelligent experience, but also objectively promotes the accelerated evolution of future Mac hardware configurations towards larger-capacity basic storage and unified memory.
