Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella affirmed the ongoing streamlining efforts of the Xbox team and said that Xbox plans to return to growth in the next fiscal year. Currently, Xbox's emergency restructuring plan has advanced about 75%, during which thousands of people have been laid off, multiple games have been canceled, and some studios have been spun off or merged.
In an interview with Alex Heath's "Sources" podcast, Nadella said that he is satisfied with Xbox's existing studio and intellectual property lineup, and is also optimistic about the team's ability to continue making games. Talking about the reorganization, he said that the team and the new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma are advancing the streamlining work and expressed that they are happy to see this progress.
Xbox owns game titles such as "Minecraft"; Microsoft also previously completed the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Nadella did not explain in the interview how various studios or projects will be arranged after the reorganization.
As for the next direction of Xbox, Nadella said that the company needs to find a sustainable business model to make games reach more people. He did not specify how this model would work.
Nadella also said that Microsoft hopes to be a game publisher and platform provider on both PC and Xbox. He said Sharma and his team came up with a plan for Xbox to return to growth in the next fiscal year and are currently moving forward with that plan and continuing to make games.
