Microsoft is testing new features to speed up app startup in Windows 11 preview builds

Abstract:

Microsoft is currently testing a new feature called accelerated application launch in the Windows 11 preview version, but this feature currently only supports the Microsoft Edge browser. According to Microsoft, other application developers can also submit applications to Microsoft. In the future, applications that have been approved can load faster when users start.

The traditional startup process will first create a temporary process to check whether the Microsoft Edge browser is already running, and then forward the request to the already started window. The temporary process will then automatically exit. The new accelerated startup feature allows the Microsoft Edge browser to register the window for receiving startup requests with the system in advance to eliminate this forwarding process. Microsoft claims that the startup response will be faster when the device is running multiple tasks.

This improvement is mainly aimed at hot startup. Not all applications can be accelerated. If Microsoft Edge is not running in the background, it does not meet the conditions for accelerated startup. By default, the Microsoft Edge browser will also retain a small number of background processes for persistence after closing the browser window, so when the user starts it again, a new startup mechanism will be superimposed, so the response speed should be faster.

Microsoft said that other applications can use similar mechanisms in the future, but the Microsoft Learn support document currently lists the relevant interfaces as limited access functions. Developers need to apply for a special unlocking token from Microsoft, and the application must also handle the single-instance running logic by itself (that is, to avoid problems caused by starting multiple instances at the same time).

This new interface is expected to only support Windows 11 26H2/26H1/25H2 versions (because Windows 11 24H2 and older versions have ended support), so it will not be available on older versions that are not supported. Interested developers can click here to access Microsoft’s support documentation:
