Xbox Elite Series 3 controller appears at Design Lab backstage, bringing magnetic joysticks and advanced tactile feedback

Abstract:

Microsoft Xbox Design Lab background data seems to have exposed the configuration options of the new generation Elite Series 3 wireless controller in advance. The relevant information comes from Reddit users' compilation of design lab backend data and is not officially released by Microsoft; Windows Central editors stated that the original interface data had been removed before their verification, so the entire content could not be independently verified. Microsoft has not confirmed the product name, specifications, price or release date so far.

Leaked information shows that the new controller may provide Hall effect and TMR magnetic rocker modules, and different rocker damping feels can be selected. TMR refers to tunnel magnetoresistive sensing technology, which detects the joystick position through magnetic field changes like the Hall effect. If the relevant configuration is true, it will be an important change in the Elite series compared to the traditional potentiometer joystick. However, the specific durability and drift performance still have to wait for actual machine testing. It cannot be concluded that there will be no drift at all based on the technical name alone. The information also lists options such as standard, long pole, and low-friction silent rocker.

The controller is said to use a VCM motor called "Advanced Tactile Feedback" and retain the trigger vibration motor; however, the leaked content also mentioned that some versions may not be equipped with the relevant motor. Other possible new features include a dedicated audio scroll wheel, as well as a variety of interchangeable D-pad keys, back paddles, and panels. The paddles are said to be available in short, long, wide, butterfly and other designs, while the direction keys include standard, cross and textured styles; there are as many as 27 mappable rocker cap and paddle combinations. Xbox Design Lab may also provide metallic panels, different colors, theme designs and engraving customizations.

The same batch of data also mentions four SKUs, divided into basic version and "Elite Complete" set, and versions with and without motor are provided respectively; there is currently no reliable information on whether the set will come with charging base, storage box and other accessories. The product's internal codename is said to be "Edessa", and the related customization project is marked as "Beatrice" in the background data. These names have also not been confirmed by Microsoft.

The Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 currently sold by Microsoft supports adjustable damping rockers, short-stroke trigger locks, interchangeable rocker caps, direction keys and paddles, and can save three sets of customized configurations. The official nominal battery life is up to about 40 hours after charging. A Windows Central reporter said that he heard from sources that Series 3 may be announced soon and is expected to be available in time for the Christmas shopping season; this is only the news obtained by the media, and the price, release time and final specifications are still to be officially announced by Microsoft.
