Abstract:
Microsoft's buyout office suite Office 2021 is about to reach the end of its life cycle. According to Microsoft's official product life cycle strategy, Office 2021 will officially end support on October 13, 2026, which is less than a month away. At that time, the software will no longer receive any official security patches, quality updates, and technical support services.
Unlike previous versions of Office that enjoyed a technical support cycle of up to ten years (five years of mainstream support and five years of extended support), Microsoft significantly shortened its life cycle when it released Office 2021. It only provided a five-year fixed life cycle strategy and did not include additional extended support stages. Coming to an end on the same day as Office 2021, it also includes extended support for Office 2016 and Office 2019. This means that after October Patch Tuesday, the above three generations of buyout Office suites will be completely stopped.
Microsoft issued a reminder that continuing to use unsupported Office 2021 after the life cycle end date may expose computers and corporate networks to potential security threats and new vulnerabilities. Although existing applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook will still be able to start and run normally after the end of support, the lack of follow-up security protection measures will greatly increase the probability of suffering from malware and network attacks. At the same time, compatibility issues with new versions of operating systems or cloud services may gradually arise in the future.
To ensure data security and office collaboration efficiency, Microsoft recommends that individual and corporate users still running Office 2021 plan migration plans as soon as possible. The official first recommended upgrade path is the subscription-based Microsoft 365 service to continuously obtain the latest feature upgrades, cloud storage, and built-in AI collaboration tools such as Copilot. For users who insist on choosing a one-time buyout license and do not want to pay monthly or yearly, Microsoft's recently launched Office 2024 has become the only official buyout alternative upgrade option. In addition, the third-party micropatch service provider 0patch has also previously announced that it will provide paid unofficial critical security patch continuation services for Office 2021 after the official suspension, but this does not come from Microsoft's official support channels.
