Abstract:
Microsoft Executive Vice President Ryan Roslansky recently posted on LinkedIn to complain about the "AI garbage" issue. Roslansky is responsible for LinkedIn and core businesses such as Microsoft 365, Teams, Outlook and Copilot, and is at the center of Microsoft's AI strategy.
The reason Roslansky’s statement is noteworthy is that he is not just any executive complaining about AI on social media, but the leader in charge of one of Microsoft’s most important product lines.
Roslansky described a personal experience in the post. He received a document that was obviously generated by AI, so he used AI to summarize it. It turned out that there were no new ideas in the document, and the entire process was equivalent to gaining nothing.
He called this phenomenon an infinite loop and warned that companies may spend a lot of money on AI tools, only to allow employees to bypass the thinking, writing and reading that should be done by themselves.
Roslansky also raised the concept of a homogeneous ocean, worrying that people are increasingly accustomed to consuming generic content generated by AI instead of contributing their own ideas and experiences.
Ironically, Microsoft is one of the companies that has integrated AI into almost all software experiences. In the past year, Microsoft has integrated Copilot into almost all products such as Windows, Office, Edge, Teams, Outlook, etc., and is also vigorously promoting the adoption of AI agents and autonomous workflows by enterprises.
In November last year, Pavan Davaluri, the head of Windows, confirmed that the system would be changed to a proxy operating system, which caused large-scale user dissatisfaction. Since then, Microsoft has promised improvements. It is currently developing an AI uninstall button for Windows, and has also begun to try to use AI in more practical directions.
