Abstract:
Microsoft recently issued an important reminder to enterprise IT administrators around the world, calling on major organizations to accelerate the modernization of legacy web assets and business systems, and to be fully prepared for the official end of life (EOL) of the built-in "IE mode" (Internet Explorer mode) of the Microsoft Edge browser in 2029.
Microsoft clearly emphasized that although this model still serves as a key bridge to ensure the continuity of enterprise legacy business systems, its end point is gradually approaching and organizations should not delay migration plans.

As early as June 2022, when the Internet Explorer 11 independent desktop client was officially retired, in order to avoid a catastrophic impact on corporate internal proprietary systems that relied heavily on the old version of Trident (MSHTML) typesetting engine and ActiveX controls, Microsoft specifically built an IE compatibility mode into Microsoft Edge based on the Chromium kernel. At that time, Microsoft promised that this feature would receive continuous support until at least 2029, aiming to provide enterprises with a smooth transition period of several years to complete the reconstruction and technology replacement of core business software.
In this guidance for IT administrators, Microsoft reiterated its established support schedule and reminded organizations not to underestimate the time and cost of a full migration. The internal office automation (OA) systems, core intranet tools, and industrial manufacturing control interfaces of many multinational enterprises, financial institutions, and government departments have deep historical technology accumulation. Completely stripping away their dependence on IE's proprietary features often requires lengthy code rewriting, third-party component replacement, and cross-department security compatibility testing. If an enterprise chooses to start the renovation project when the 2029 deadline is approaching, it will face extremely severe business interruption risks and operation and maintenance pressure.
Microsoft recommends that architects and technical administrators responsible for infrastructure in each organization should rely on official tools such as Enterprise Site List Manager (Enterprise Site List Manager) at this stage to systematically inventory and sort out all sites and applications within the enterprise that are still calling IE mode. By establishing a batched and phased elimination roadmap, administrators should prioritize migrating frequently used internal services to an architectural environment based on modern web standards (such as HTML5, CSS3, and modern JavaScript), gradually narrowing the actual usage boundaries of IE mode.
Analysts point out that as modern network security standards have increasingly stringent requirements for memory security, permission sandboxes, and modern encryption protocols, the cost and potential security attack surface of long-term compatibility with rendering engines that are more than 20 years old are increasing day by day. Microsoft has once again sounded the alarm, marking that the old Internet technology legacy represented by Internet Explorer is entering an irreversible final countdown stage. Only by fully embracing modern browser open standards as soon as possible can enterprises smoothly pass the handover deadline while ensuring the security of core productivity.
