Marcus Ash, head of design and research for Microsoft's Windows and Devices Department, recently sent an email to Insider participants saying,
Many testers have reported that the latest experimental version has significantly improved the overall system response speed, and more optimizations will be rolled out in the fall.
Microsoft has stated on its official Insider blog since May that it is improving system response speed, focusing on File Explorer, Windows Search and overall system response. There are also architectural changes involved behind the scenes.
In August, the Explorer team stated that it had investigated and eliminated a large number of possible causes of lags and delays, and that the new right-click menu will also open faster.
At the system level, optimizations for the start menu, search, and action center have been pushed this spring, and CPU power-saving state scheduling adjustments are also specifically designed to improve perceived response speed.
Judging from the public feedback from Insider testers, Microsoft's statement is not groundless. In the discussion of the new version of Resource Manager in the experimental channel, some users said that the Resource Manager can now respond almost instantly,
The new right-click menu is also significantly simpler. Another tester said that the new right-click menu is quite "amazing" and there is no longer a perceptible delay when opening.
However, the criticism has not completely disappeared. Some users left a message under Microsoft's official explanation saying that Windows does feel better and more user-friendly overall, but there is still a perceived delay of about 300 to 600 milliseconds when opening a folder, and the animation on the 60Hz screen is not smooth enough.
Microsoft has never given out specific benchmark test data. Neither Ash’s latest statement nor previous Windows blogs have provided direct comparison data on the startup time or delay of the old and new versions. “Windows has become faster” is still a subjective feeling.
