Perplexity Computer adds Mac local running mode, allowing AI tasks to be processed on the device side

📅 2026-10-21

Abstract:

Perplexity announced that the Mac version of the Perplexity app now supports having Computer Agents run completely natively. Task planning, reasoning, file processing and tool execution are all completed on the device; after user authorization, it can operate local Mac files and applications such as Notes, Messages, Mail, Keynote and Numbers without sending personal data to the cloud. Code and tool execution run in an isolated sandbox environment.

Local mode uses Qwen 3.6 or Perplexity’s own PPLX Pro model, which is a further trained version based on Qwen. The feature is open to supported Apple chip Macs, with Perplexity recommending at least 36GB of memory; currently available to Pro, Max, and Enterprise subscribers. Users can download local models and select "fully local" mode in the Mac version of the app.

Running completely locally does not mean that all tasks can be completed offline. If they need the latest information, browser or cloud connection applications, users can authorize the computer to call cloud services and decide whether to use the quota; when encountering complex tasks, they can also choose to call more than 15 cutting-edge models. Perplexity also provides a hybrid computing mode, which allows the cloud model to be responsible for networked research and inference, and the local model to process private files; officials say this mode can be used on Apple chip Macs with at least 24GB of unified memory and running macOS 15 or newer versions.

Perplexity said that local mode allows users to retain more control when processing sensitive files, but it is still up to the user to enable cloud assistance. New features are available now, and availability depends on your Mac chip, memory configuration, app version, and subscription plan.
