Abstract:
A retired painter and decorator in Woking, England, who did not want to be named, submitted a batch of Pokémon cards that had been stored in an attic for about 15 years to Ewbank's for auction. The total transaction volume of the entire collection reached 1.56 million pounds, equivalent to approximately 2.09 million U.S. dollars, setting a new record in the auction house's thirty-year history.

This collector became exposed to the Pokémon trading card game in the late 1990s when his son traded cards with his classmates. He has since viewed the cards as potential investments, purchasing the complete set via eBay. After his son lost interest, he continued to collect the cards until about 15 years ago when he put the card album into the attic. Later, when he saw the news that a card was sold for 6,000 pounds, he re-examined his collection.
Among the auction items, a 2002 Legendary Collection master set in nearly perfect condition was originally estimated to be 15,000 to 20,000 pounds, but was finally sold for 130,000 pounds. The complete Skyridge set was purchased by the original collector for 300 pounds. The auction was expected to be no more than 40,000 pounds, and it finally sold for 97,500 pounds.

The Aquapolis Master Set, with some cards in poor condition, was still sold for £49,500. The collection also includes EX Team Rocket Returns, EX Delta Species, EX Deoxys complete sets, and a full volume of POP Series cards. This auction also showed that the completeness, scarcity and preservation status will significantly affect the transaction results of old cards.
