Samsung sued for US$15 million for TV packaging with singer's photo

📅 2026-09-14

Abstract:

Recently, Samsung and Dua Lipa have been involved in a legal dispute over the use of the singer's portrait on Samsung TV packaging boxes.

Currently, Samsung has applied to the court to dismiss Lipa’s $15 million lawsuit, arguing that this picture will not mislead people into thinking that she is endorsing Samsung TVs.

It is reported that in May 2026, Lipa's legal team filed a lawsuit against Samsung in the California District Court.

His attorney alleged that Samsung used the copyrighted singer's photos without permission and placed the photos in a prominent position on the outer packaging boxes of Samsung TVs sold in retail channels.

The complaint stated that Samsung used Lipa's likeness for commercial purposes without authorization, and that before the lawsuit was filed, it had sent Samsung several cease-and-desist notices.

Lipa claimed US$15 million, claiming copyright infringement, trademark infringement and publicity infringement. A few days after the lawsuit was filed, Samsung responded.

The company said the use of Lipa's image was to showcase the content available on Samsung's free streaming service, Samsung TV Plus, and not to promote the TV set itself. More importantly, this picture comes from a content partner, who has clearly assured Samsung that it has obtained all necessary authorizations.

Samsung stated that it was based on this guarantee that the image was printed on the retail packaging box, and therefore denied that there was any deliberate misuse of Lipa's likeness.

According to reports, Samsung requested the court to dismiss Lipa’s lawsuit in its entirety in a recent legal document.

Samsung contends that there is no information that would lead one to believe that Dua Lipa is endorsing Samsung TVs; Samsung's attorney said: "These images only show the screen interface of the TV to demonstrate applications and...examples of content that can be played on the TV."
