Abstract:

According to Reuters, citing multiple people familiar with the matter, Solidigm, a memory chip supplier owned by South Korean semiconductor giant SK Hynix, is considering investing in and building a new NAND flash memory production plant in the United States. This potential blockbuster investment plan marks that global chip giants are further responding to the policy direction of the United States to promote the reshoring of semiconductor manufacturing, aiming to strengthen the resilience of the supply chain for the North American market and key customers.

Solidigm is an exclusive subsidiary established by SK Hynix after acquiring Intel's (Intel) NAND flash memory and solid-state drive (SSD) business in 2020. It occupies a pivotal position in the enterprise-level data center storage and high-performance solid-state drive market. Sources pointed out that in view of the rapid advancement of global artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, data centers have experienced explosive growth in demand for high-density, high-throughput NAND flash memory and large-capacity solid-state drives, which prompted Solidigm to begin seriously evaluating the feasibility of directly establishing a manufacturing base in the United States close to its core customer groups.

Although the final site selection, total planned investment and specific factory construction schedule of the factory are still in the early stages of evaluation, analysts believe that the huge financial subsidies and tax incentives provided by the US government through the "Chips and Science Act" (CHIPS Act) are an important driving force to attract Solidigm to locate new production capacity in the United States. If the project is finally finalized, it will not only help it enjoy the dividends of U.S. policy more conveniently, but will also significantly reduce the potential disruption to the supply chain caused by transnational logistics risks and geopolitical factors.

Previously, SK Hynix has launched a number of advanced processes and packaging layouts in the North American market. Industry experts point out that if Solidigm successfully advances the construction of the US NAND flash memory factory, it will create synergy with SK Hynix's existing investments in advanced packaging and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) fields, helping the group occupy a more favorable strategic position in the global storage market share competition with competitors such as Micron and Samsung Electronics.

Currently, SK Hynix and Solidigm have not officially issued a formal statement on the rumor of building a factory. Affected by the good news about this potential investment, the subsequent trend of the relevant supply chain and semiconductor equipment sector has attracted great attention from the capital market and industry research institutions.
