Sony previews new retro headphones MDR-3R, paying homage to the classic design of the original Walkman

📅 2026-10-30

Abstract:

Sony recently released a short teaser video through its official YouTube channel, hinting at the upcoming launch of a new headset with a classic retro design. Judging from the product outline shown in the trailer, this new product is likely to be a reinterpretation of Sony's early Walkman headphones. It is expected to be unveiled under the name MDR-3R, and the official release time is scheduled for November 5, 2026.

The slogan "New yet, original..." appeared in the trailer video, which means "new yet, but still classic." The picture shows the outline of a pair of compact headphones and marks the release time at 8 a.m. (Pacific Time, US) on November 5. While Sony has yet to announce specific product specifications, its design is clearly reminiscent of the early Walkman era.

The MDR-3L2 featured a lightweight, compact head-mounted design, in stark contrast to the traditional large headphones of the time. The color scheme of the blue headphone body and orange ear pads is also highly recognizable. The blue and orange visual elements used in this trailer are believed to be a tribute to this classic color scheme.

In fact, an overseas Sony product information website has previously speculated that Sony is developing a new headset with a retro appearance based on import and supply chain registration information. The emergence of this official trailer further enhances the credibility of this news.

However, what currently attracts the most attention is still the specific connection method of the new product. Sony has not yet stated whether this headset will use a USB-C interface or retain the traditional 3.5mm stereo headphone plug. Considering its product positioning as a tribute to the classic Walkman, traditional wired connections may become the focus of consumers' attention.

In addition, there is still no answer as to whether the new product will faithfully reproduce the appearance of the original MDR-3 series, or whether it will retain the classic shape and add modern acoustic units, wires and wearing structures. Specific parameters such as drive unit specifications, frequency response, impedance, weight and selling price have not yet been announced.

Sony plans to officially announce this product at 8 a.m. (Pacific Time) on November 5. According to the current information, the new product is more like a reinterpretation of Walkman’s classic design language rather than simply launching a regular new headset.

For Sony, Walkman is not only a series of portable music players, but also represents the company's important history in the field of personal music consumption. If the design of classic headphones such as the MDR-3L2 can be brought back to the market this time, it will undoubtedly attract the attention of many old Walkman users and retro audio equipment enthusiasts.
