Abstract:
A study by the Carnegie China Think Tank shows that China has surpassed the United States as the main work location for top AI researchers. This study shows that more and more Chinese AI researchers choose to stay and work in China, making China the preferred destination for high-end AI talents.
Research data shows that
the proportion of top AI researchers working in China will increase from 27.1% in 2022 to 40.6% in 2025
; During the same period, the proportion of top AI talents in the United States fell from 46.4% to 34.2%.Carnegie China attributes this trend to two major reasons: China's AI industry is booming and the supply of local jobs is increasing; in addition, Chinese science and engineering graduates who want to work in the United States face increasingly stringent visa restrictions. In 2025, 69% of scientific researchers who received their undergraduate studies in China will eventually choose to find employment in China.

In 2025, talents with Chinese background accounted for 57% of the global sample, an increase of 11 percentage points. However, the United States is still the world's number one country in attracting AI talents, with a net inflow of 2,145 scientific researchers in 2025.
