The new "Resident Evil" movie's U.S. box office is expected to reach $60 million in its first weekend, and is expected to set a series opening record

The new R-rated version of the live-action "Resident Evil" film directed by Zach Craig has a strong start. The film's first weekend box office in North America is expected to reach US$53 million to US$55 million, with the industry's high estimate being close to US$60 million, which is expected to set a new record for the live-action film series.

The film was released in 3,684 theaters, earning a total of US$26.3 million on Friday and in advance. According to current estimates, the single-day box office on Saturday may be approximately US$20 million, a 24% decrease from Friday and advance screenings.

Sony's current three-day opening weekend estimate is US$53 million to US$55 million. Even if it ends up staying in this range, the film will still exceed the personal best opening of $43.5 million set by Zach Craig's previous work; if it reaches $60 million, it will enter the top ten September openings in North American film history, ranking seventh.

In terms of audience feedback, the film received a B+ CinemaScore, the highest score in the "Resident Evil" live-action film series. In the PostTrak survey, the proportion of explicit recommendations among general viewers rose to 71%; the proportions for viewers aged 35 to 44, Latino and Hispanic viewers, and men over 25 were 76%, 74%, and 73% respectively.

Ticket purchase data shows that 54% of viewers choose to buy tickets on the day of the movie. Another 46% of the audience said they entered the venue because they love the "Resident Evil" series, and 37% were attracted by director Zach Craig. The current gender ratio of the audience is 66% male and 34% female.

High-end theaters contributed 53% of the film’s first weekend revenue, of which IMAX accounted for 16% and other high-end theaters accounted for 37%. The film's $26.3 million in Friday and advance screenings has exceeded the total North American box office of "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" of $17 million, and is close to the final North American score of $26.8 million for "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter."
