Abstract:
To meet growing demand, VisionPower Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., a joint venture between TSMC affiliate World Advanced and Dutch company NXP Semiconductors. (VSMC for short) is considering building a second Singapore chip factory.
Fang Lue, the world's advanced and chairman of VSMC, said in an interview that the new factory can produce more advanced chips than the first factory in Singapore.
While major manufacturers such as TSMC are expanding production capacity, growing demand for AI services and the data centers they require has led to a global semiconductor supply shortage. The craze has prompted Taiwanese manufacturers to look overseas to establish new production bases, with places such as Singapore attracting global investment.
Fang Lue said: "The supply shortage will continue for some time. We should have built two factories here at once."
VSMC held an inauguration ceremony for its first chip factory in Singapore on Monday. Construction of the plant will begin in late 2024, and the company expects to invest $7.8 billion. Fanglue declined to estimate the cost of a potential second plant.
He said: "It is too early to talk about the budget now, because we have not yet decided which technology to use. Different technologies, the total investment scale will be very different."
