Abstract:
Microsoft Xbox recently responded to rumors on the Internet that Game Pass will undergo a large-scale restructuring in 2027, making it clear that there are currently no new plans that have been determined, and no announced first-day additions to Game Pass Ultimate games will change as a result. However, Xbox's statement did not completely rule out the possibility of adjusting the service structure in the future. The company admitted that it is still continuing to test different Game Pass plans and evaluate the service model based on different markets and player feedback.

The rumor first appeared on an online forum and spread quickly. Relevant news claims that Xbox plans to significantly redesign Game Pass in 2027, which may include adding ad-supported low-price tiers, re-splitting cloud gaming and online multiplayer gaming services, and canceling the policy of joining Game Pass on the day of launch for some games.
The most talked-about change in rumors is that Xbox may no longer consider "first-day addition to Game Pass" for first-party games as a core service content. According to relevant reports, Microsoft may reduce subscription prices in exchange for this change, and at the same time further split features currently included in subscriptions such as cloud games and online multiplayer games into independent paid items.
According to the rumored version, in the future Game Pass may have a monthly ad-supported package of $12.99, an ad-free package of $19.99, and a $14.99 package that includes a game library and multiplayer features. In addition, there may also be a $10.99 standalone online multiplayer subscription, a $5.99 family add-on option, and a $5.99 cloud gaming add-on package that provides 25 hours of gameplay. However, these prices and specific plans have not been officially confirmed by Microsoft.
An Xbox spokesperson later told the media that the company regularly tests different Game Pass product plans and studies which models are most suitable for players in different markets. There are currently no new changes to announce and no plans that have been finalized. At the same time, Xbox specifically emphasized that games that have previously announced that they will be added to Game Pass Ultimate on the first day will not be affected by these rumors.
This means that at least for now, the core mode of Game Pass Ultimate has not changed according to online rumors. The first-party games that have been announced will still be added to the service according to the previously announced plan. Players do not need to worry about the announced first-day games being canceled because of this rumor.
However, Microsoft's wording also leaves some room. Xbox did not say that there would be no future adjustments to Game Pass, but emphasized that there are currently "no confirmed plans." This is consistent with Xbox’s continuous adjustments to its Game Pass product structure in recent years.
In fact, Game Pass has gone through multiple changes in the past year. Microsoft had previously raised the price of some Game Pass tiers, and then adjusted some plans under the leadership of current Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. At the same time, the "Call of Duty" series no longer provides first-day Game Pass benefits as in the past.
Microsoft’s Xbox restructuring plan announced in July this year also clearly acknowledged that the previous growth rate of Game Pass did not meet the company’s expectations. Asha Sharma said in an internal letter that Xbox had bet on Game Pass, cross-platform distribution, and expanded content portfolio in the past. These businesses did create value, but the growth rate did not meet expectations, so the company needed to readjust Xbox's business model.
In terms of cloud gaming, Microsoft has confirmed a real adjustment plan. Xbox announced that starting from November this year, it will change the way cloud games are included in Game Pass. Game Pass Ultimate will include 15 hours of cloud gaming time per month, Premium will include 10 hours, and Essential will include 5 hours. After the limit is exceeded, players can purchase additional cloud gaming time through the Xbox store.
Microsoft said this change is expected to affect approximately 4% of Game Pass subscribers. At the same time, the company also plans to allow players to use the Xbox cloud gaming service independently without a Game Pass subscription starting in November.
Therefore, although the 2027 Game Pass comprehensive restructuring plan circulating on the Internet has not yet been confirmed by Microsoft, some of the directions are similar to the business changes that Xbox has publicly announced, such as the shift from unlimited use of cloud games to monthly provision of credits, and the exploration of more flexible subscription methods in the future.
Xbox currently prefers to describe these changes as ongoing product experiments rather than established long-term solutions. The company needs to continuously adjust Game Pass based on player needs, subscription scale and service costs in different regions. Whether functions such as cloud games, multiplayer games and first-day games should all be packaged in one subscription or further split may continue to be the direction of Microsoft's future exploration.
Therefore, what is currently certain is that the so-called "Comprehensive Reorganization of Game Pass in 2027" is not a formal plan that Microsoft has announced, especially the cancellation of the first day of joining the game has not yet been officially confirmed. The real signal left by Microsoft is that Game Pass may continue to change in the future, but to what extent it will be adjusted, and what price and service combination it will ultimately adopt, have not yet been determined.
