Abstract:
Microsoft has begun rolling out the “disc-to-digital” function to all Xbox players. This feature was previously open to Xbox Insider test users. Microsoft confirmed in August that it was developing related solutions. After several weeks of testing, it has now been expanded to all players. Microsoft announced the launch via social media, and many users have also received feature opening notifications in the Xbox app.
Players can insert eligible Xbox game discs into Xbox One or Xbox Series X consoles that support optical drives to receive digital licenses for their logged-in Microsoft accounts. Once completed, the game will run like a digital version purchased from the Microsoft Store and support features like Xbox Play Anywhere. If you put the CD into a host using another Microsoft account, you can also transfer the license to the corresponding account. This way, players can digitize physical games while still retaining the resale value of the discs.
However, not all Xbox One or Xbox Series X game discs are eligible for conversion. Microsoft stated that some discs do not include the support required to enable this feature due to different production dates or pressing batches; in addition, if the publisher is not authorized to convert the game to a digital license, the conversion will fail and the system will display a "Disc License Unavailable" prompt.
The program has gradually increased participating publishers during the Insider test period, and recently Ubisoft and Sega have joined in support. However, large publishers such as Bandai Namco and Square Enix have not yet opened the conversion of their physical games. The Xbox community has set up an unofficial page to track which game discs can be converted.
Microsoft also released a FAQ about the licensing system, which includes how to bulk collect digital licenses for a large collection of game discs.
