Three years after the Surface Duo was first launched on September 10, Microsoft has ended support for the product. The company has stated from the beginning that the Surface Duo will only receive operating system updates for three years, which means today is the last day Microsoft has to keep its word.

Going forward, Microsoft will no longer provide new operating system updates or security patches for the original Surface Duo, meaning Android 12L will be the last version of the operating system it officially receives. Surface Duo has only received two major operating system updates, one less than the average of three that most high-end flagship Android devices now receive.

Surface Duo users can continue to use their devices without any issues for the time being, as apps will at least continue to be updated as usual.

Regardless, Microsoft hasn't developed new features or fixed bugs for the Surface Duo in months, so current Surface Duo owners won't miss out on much beyond security patches. In addition, thanks to support for third-party ROMs, enthusiasts can install customized versions of Android 13/14 on their devices.

Microsoft will continue to provide support for the second-generation Surface Duo for one year, and the current support deadline is October 21, 2024. The Surface Duo 2 has only received one major Android OS update so far, which means it will need at least two more updates to keep up with other Android OEMs.
