Due to a cyber security incident, Australia's second largest port operator announced the suspension of operations, seriously affecting the flow of imports and exports of goods in the country. The Australian Global Port Group (DPWorldAustralia) claimed that it discovered that "the system was compromised" on the morning of Friday (November 10) local time, and decided to close the port at 17:00 pm. "The company immediately took actions such as cutting off the network to prevent unauthorized access."

Accordingly, this move resulted in "critical systems supporting Australian port operations being unable to operate normally" and cargo transportation at ports in many major cities such as Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Fremantle came to a standstill. It is reported that the cargo ship can still unload cargo, but it cannot leave the port normally.

Shortly before going to press, Australia's Global Ports Group said through local media that despite the company's team working "around the clock" to resume operations, the port remained closed as of Saturday afternoon. The company also mentioned that it has notified relevant government departments of the cybersecurity incident.

Australian Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil wrote on social media that the Australian government is coordinating its response to the incident and will hold a meeting soon. National Cyber Security Coordinator Darren Goldie said the outage could last several days and the National Cyber Security Center would provide technical advice and assistance to companies.

Coincidentally, earlier this week, ICBC Financial Services Co., Ltd. (ICBCFS), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Co., Ltd. in the United States, also issued a statement saying that it had been attacked by ransomware, causing some system interruptions.

At the time, ICBCFS stated that it immediately cut off and isolated the affected systems after discovering the attack, had launched a thorough investigation and reported it to law enforcement, and was advancing recovery efforts with the support of a team of professional information security experts.

In recent years, cyberattack cases have been on the rise in all walks of life, and many organizations have become blackmail targets for hackers. In this type of attack, hackers typically gain control of an organization's systems and blackmail them into paying a ransom.

It is also worth mentioning that the world’s largest technology merger and acquisition so far this year is a transaction related to network security. On September 21, Cisco, a well-known American technology company, agreed to acquire the network security company Splunk for approximately US$28 billion.

Cisco CEO explained during the earnings call that with the rise of hyper-connectivity and artificial intelligence, the value of data will rise. Correspondingly, cyber threats will increase day by day, "and that's what this deal is about."
