The Wireless Power Alliance announced at CES on Monday that more Android devices will use the MagSafe-based Qi2 charging standard in 2025. But that doesn't necessarily mean all devices will come with magnets; the WPC says it now offers "Qi2Ready" certification for phones that require a case to add a magnetic alignment ring, but otherwise meet the charging standard's specifications.
The release of Qi2Ready could explain recent rumors that the Samsung Galaxy S25 phone will need a case to add magnetic charging capabilities, and Samsung said it will release Qi2Galaxy devices later this year. At the same time, Google said it is "committed to adopting the Qi2 wireless charging standard" and will "provide its own high-power wireless charging technology to WPC."
Currently, most Android phones require a case with embedded magnets for MagSafe-style wireless charging. Except for mobile phones such as HMDS Skyline, only Apple's mobile phones are equipped with the magnetic ring required for normal Qi2 certification.
The WPC also announced that an upcoming part of the Qi2 standard will be in-car wireless charging, using technology provided by Panasonic Automotive Systems. In-car wireless charging uses a mobile coil that can be moved to align with the coil in the phone. Moving coils and Qi2Ready certification are both part of the Qiv2.1 update.
