According to early research, this number is more than twice the salary of Nvidia's artificial intelligence engineers. According to surveys, OpenAI engineering staff are among the highest paid in the industry. Data shows that the expected value of a talented new employee at ChatGPT is about $800,000 per year in salary plus bonuses and stock awards.
We looked at early artificial intelligence (AI) engineer salary data, and recent reports seem to confirm that OpenAI is the largest payer in AI, with new engineers and researchers making twice as much net income as those working at Nvidia, for example.
Artificial intelligence in 2023 will be more than just a buzzword in the IT industry, it will likely be remembered as the year that laid the foundations of what we know as generative artificial intelligence. Companies dabbling in artificial intelligence have delivered handsome earnings to investors this year, and that good fortune appears to have trickled down to their employees, with salaries soaring for those hired for their AI expertise.
According to data from Levels.fyi, the salary of artificial intelligence engineers is expected to be 12.5% higher than that of non-artificial intelligence engineers. If you look at OpenAI's engineering job openings, you'll likely see salary ranges ranging from $200,000 to $450,000. However, combined with bonuses and stock awards, lucky employees will enjoy a total annual salary of nearly $800,000.
The reason for the generous salaries and bonuses seems to be the old laws of supply and demand at work. Sources report that finding and retaining experienced talent with the right skills is extremely difficult. Furthermore, experience is said to be especially important here, as “there’s a big difference between understanding AI models on a theoretical level and having the skills and experience to actually apply them,” says Bloomberg.
In the medium term, the pressure on the AI talent market does not appear to be easing. We still seem to be riding the wave of artificial intelligence, and 2024 has been informally dubbed the year of the artificial intelligence PC. As a result, there will be even greater demand for AI skills to develop new apps and experiences to power all new AI hardware and software like Windows 12.
In other OpenAI news, there are reports that the company is looking to raise new funding at a market valuation of $100B or higher. Details of the financing have yet to be determined, so terms, timing and valuation could change, sources said. There are also rumors of a new chip joint venture between OpenAI and Abu Dhabi-based G42.
