Recently, investment bank Piper Sandler released a report stating that "GTA6" is expected to set a new record in the gaming industry on its first day of release - sales exceeding 45 million copies. This prediction is much higher than the expectations of some players in the community, and also highlights the market's unprecedented attention to Rockstar Games' new work.
The prediction is based on an analytical model using user activity data from the Reddit subreddit r/GTA6. Analysts compared current and predicted community traffic with launch sales of past AAA titles. One scenario assumes that by the time the game is released, the number of weekly active users will increase from approximately 870,000 to 1.3 million. After applying industry standard coefficients, a predicted value of approximately 46 million will be obtained.

Piper Sandler also uses a more conservative estimation method, based on current community activity and historical median coefficients. The results from both methods fell within the same range, which analysts said bolstered the credibility of the forecasts.
The report pointed out that the correlation between fan community activity and first-release sales has been verified in many masterpieces before, and the correlation can reach up to 94%. The average multiple of 3A game samples in recent years is in the range of tens of times.
However, this ambitious forecast remains to be viewed in a historical context. In 2013, "GTA 5" sold approximately 11.2 million copies on its first day of release, which was considered one of the largest launches in history at that time. Since then, the series has continued to grow with the help of "GTA Online", and players' expectations for "GTA 6" have accumulated for 13 years, further strengthening potential demand.

At present, uncertainties still exist. The installed capacity of the new generation of consoles may be lower than when the previous game was released, and the increase in the price of consoles and components may also affect the purchasing ability of some players.
If this prediction comes true, "GTA 6" will not only set a new sales record, but may also come close to recouping its estimated development costs of billions of dollars on the first day of release. However, experts also emphasized that although the model is quite convincing, it is only a prediction and not an established fact.
