Germany's interior ministry plans to force telecom operators to reduce the use of equipment from Huawei and ZTE in their 5G networks, a German government official said, after a review highlighted overreliance on the two Chinese suppliers. The official said the ministry has devised a staggered approach to avoid excessive interference as operators remove all key components from Chinese suppliers in 5G core networks by 2026.
Operators such as Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone should also reduce the share of Chinese components in their RAN and transmission networks to a maximum of 25% by October 1, 2026.
According to a survey by telecom consulting firm StrandConsult, Huawei currently accounts for 59% of Germany's 5GRAN networks.
Germany's interior ministry hopes to present its proposal to the cabinet starting next week, but is likely to face resistance from Germany's digital affairs ministry, which fears it could affect Germany's already slow digitalization process.
It is reported that Germany is considered to be lagging behind in implementing EU 5G network security measures. The measures were agreed three years ago to restrict the use of network equipment from Huawei and ZTE from suppliers deemed "high risk" by the EU.
Last week, the German government said in response to a parliamentary inquiry that it had so far not banned the use of any new Chinese critical components in 5G networks since the IT security law was allowed to take effect in May 2021.
