A Tesla Model Y posted on the Reddit platform and shared his experience of installing a solar charging device for Model Y, which attracted the attention of netizens. According to his introduction, he installed a total of 9 solar panels on the roof of the car, which can be stored together when driving, and can charge the vehicle efficiently when unfolded for charging.

Depending on the configuration, his daily charging tests were conducted in sunny Los Angeles, and each charge was limited to less than 5 hours.

If AC charging is used with a 2000-watt system, Model Y's range can be increased by 20 miles; If DC charging is used with a 4000-watt system, the range can be increased by 60 miles (96 kilometers).

Considering the size and weight of roof solar panels,He uses telescopic carbon fiber tubes to deploy solar charging panels, and the entire device weighs no more than 75kg;Even if the solar charging panel is fully unfolded, it can be parked in a parking space.

The owner said that his DIY Tesla solar charger project has been developed for two years and is still in the proof-of-concept stage. His goal is to reduce the cost of the device to $1/watt to make it scalable.
