Abstract:
After Apple released its first foldable screen phone, iPhone Duo, competitor Samsung’s new foldable screen Galaxy Z Fold 8 has experienced a surge in sales. Data shows that Galaxy Z Fold 8 sales in South Korea increased by about 10% compared with the previous week. Analysts believe that some consumers who had been waiting for Apple's new products may finally decide to buy Samsung mobile phones, thus boosting demand for Samsung's foldable screens.

Local analysts in South Korea attribute the main reason for the change to the price of Apple’s foldable screen phone and the waiting time of more than a month. iPhone Duo is not yet officially launched and will not be shipped until late October.
In terms of price, the starting price of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 in the US market is US$1,899, while the starting price of iPhone Duo is US$1,999. In the Korean market, the price difference between two folding screen mobile phones with the same capacity is more than 1 million won, equivalent to US$723. Samsung’s pricing in the European market is also much cheaper than Apple’s after conversion.
At the same time, analysts in the technology industry also pointed out that the hardware specifications of iPhone Duo currently lag behind Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8. First of all, the iPhone Duo weighs 254 grams, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 only weighs 201 grams; after folding, the thickness of the Apple folding screen is 11.3 mm, but the thickness of the Samsung folding screen is only 9.7 mm.
Industry insiders said that one screen of iPhone Duo will dim when unfolded, creating a refined effect. This is a classic Apple design that uses software to make up for the shortcomings of hardware. Apple is releasing a folding screen phone for the first time, while Samsung has already led the market with multiple folding screen models. It is not surprising that there is a hardware gap between the two.
The price gap may also allow Samsung's foldable screen to maintain sales growth in the next month. If Samsung continues to maintain the price advantage of Galaxy Z Fold 8 or provides more discounts, this growth may become even stronger.
However, competition between the two companies is not a bad thing. Market research company Counterpoint Research previously predicted that, stimulated by the release of iPhone Duo, the global foldable screen mobile phone market will grow by 24% this year and 37% next year. It is expected that cumulative shipments this year will exceed 100 million units, which will be the first time since the launch of folding screen mobile phones in 2019.
This will be amazing growth for the consumer electronics industry, which is suffering from weak demand, but it may also intensify the battle for supremacy in the folding screen field next year.
