Abstract:
In a letter sent to Congressman Jamie Raskin, a Maryland Democrat, in July this year, Apple explained the reasons for removing ICEBlock and similar apps from the App Store last year. Such applications allow users to report and share the real-time location of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
Apple said the decision to remove the product stemmed from concerns about the safety of law enforcement officers, including those raised by the Trump administration, following a fatal shooting at an ICE office in Dallas that left two detainees dead.
Apple will remove ICEBlock from the App Store in October 2025. Raskin subsequently launched an investigation into the possible involvement of the U.S. Department of Justice in the removal of related apps from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Apple's response letter has not been publicly reported before.
Apple notified ICEBlock developers at that time that information provided by law enforcement showed that the app violated App Store Review Guideline 1.1.1. Apple said that the purpose of the app is to provide location information of law enforcement officers, and that this information may be used to harm individual law enforcement officers or the entire group, so it decided to remove it from the shelves. ICEBlock has not yet been relisted.
