Abstract:
OpenAI is expanding the functional scope of the ChatGPT plug-in, trying to integrate more applications directly into the chat experience. At the Developer Day event held on Tuesday, the company announced that developers will be able to create an interactive experience similar to a standalone application in ChatGPT through plug-in extensions in the future.
ChatGPT’s existing plug-ins can connect to common tools such as Slack, SharePoint, Airtable and Google Drive. The new version of the extension can set a dedicated entrance for the application in the ChatGPT sidebar and provide an interactive panel, allowing users to directly operate related tools while chatting with ChatGPT. Developers can also add file viewers to support the file formats used by their products.
OpenAI also launched a new plug-in creation tool to help developers create plug-ins; it redesigned the process of submitting to the plug-in directory and provided clearer review feedback. The company has also improved the search, sorting and recommendation mechanisms in the plug-in directory and conversations to make it easier for users to discover suitable applications. Once a user selects a plug-in, they can also approve the access it requires on a case-by-case basis.
ChatGPT Sites, a lightweight website built by users using ChatGPT, will also support hosting plug-ins. In this way, users can share their own applications with colleagues, who can use plug-ins to connect to their data and inherit their own access rights.
In addition, OpenAI announced support for the MCP Events specification under development. The standard allows plug-ins to automatically launch workflows based on events that occur in connected apps; the company is also simplifying how automation capabilities are added and managed.
