Abstract:

Apple is evaluating the possibility of launching a new generation of rack-mounted server products and considering combining future M8 Ultra processors with NVIDIA's NVLink Fusion interconnect technology to meet the growing needs of the artificial intelligence infrastructure and high-performance computing markets.

According to exposed information, Apple is currently researching a rack-mounted server solution for sale to external customers. Although Apple has already deployed its own servers internally on a large scale to support cloud services and online businesses, this plan is different from the past. The new products will no longer be limited to Apple's internal use, but are expected to be sold to enterprises, developers and government agencies.

The rumored product line will include two specifications. One configuration is designed with dual M8 Ultra processors, and the other is further expanded to four M8 Ultra processors. It is worth noting that the M8 Ultra has not yet been released, and is even still in a very early development stage, so the relevant planning is still a long time away from the final product.

In terms of technical architecture, Apple is said to be evaluating the feasibility of using NVIDIA NVLink Fusion technology. As a high-bandwidth, low-latency interconnect solution, NVLink Fusion allows different types of computing chips and AI accelerators to directly connect to NVIDIA's data center infrastructure to achieve more efficient data exchange and computing collaboration.

In the past, NVLink mainly served NVIDIA's own hardware system. However, as NVIDIA begins to open relevant authorizations to external companies, more and more manufacturers are beginning to consider incorporating it into their own platform designs. If Apple ultimately adopts this technology, it means that future Apple servers will not only be able to rely on self-developed processors to provide computing power, but will also have the opportunity to integrate more deeply with the mainstream AI computing ecosystem.

Analysts believe that this move reflects Apple’s increasing interest in the artificial intelligence infrastructure market. As the scale of generative artificial intelligence and large-scale model training continues to expand, the demand for high-end servers from enterprises and governments continues to grow, and efficient interconnection technology has become an important part of modern data centers.

Apple has launched Xserve server products in the past and has a certain influence in the government, education and enterprise markets. However, with the adjustment of business strategy, the company finally stopped the Xserve product line in 2010 and gradually withdrew from the standard server market. Now, if the rumored new project is promoted, it will also mean that Apple is reorganizing this field after nearly two decades.

Current news shows that the new server may not be available until around 2029 at the earliest, so it is still in the very early planning stage. Regarding future customer groups, relevant information points out that Apple hopes to sell such products to artificial intelligence developers, corporate customers, and government agencies. The latter two types of customers are basically consistent with Xserve's main target markets that year.

Although there is still great uncertainty about the final shape of the project, if Apple does integrate its self-developed M series chips, high-density server design and NVIDIA interconnect technology into the same platform, it will become Apple's most ambitious attempt in the enterprise hardware market in recent years and may also mark a new step in the field of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
