Abstract:
Genesis, Hyundai Motor's luxury brand, has continued to improve its brand image in recent years, but it has never been able to rank among the world's top luxury car brands. Now, with the release of the new GV90, this situation may usher in a turning point.
GV90 will be available in two versions. The standard version is a high-end three-row, seven-seat SUV with a traditional door design; the more exclusive GV90 Neolun is a four-seat luxury model that showcases Genesis' engineering capabilities.
Neolun is equipped with what Genesis calls the world's first independently opening B-pillar-less bifold door, which hides the central B-pillar. Different from the double-door design of existing luxury models, this set of doors can be opened synchronously to form a completely open entrance to the passenger compartment on the side of the body without being blocked by the central B-pillar.
In order to ensure the strength of the body structure, Genesis designed an ultra-rigid hidden roll cage in the car, and used a roof airbag system for the first time to protect the occupants under the large glass roof.
GV90 is 208.1 inches long, or 5.29 meters, with a wheelbase of 127.8 inches, or 3.25 meters. The overall size is enough to match the visual aura required for large luxury SUVs on American highways. The vehicle is built on the Genesis eMP electric vehicle platform and is equipped with a battery pack with a capacity of 123.5 kWh, which is the largest battery capacity produced by Hyundai Motor Group to date.
The dual-motor system has a combined output of 657 horsepower and a peak torque of 590 pound-feet, or 800 Nm. In view of the usage habits of American consumers who frequently take long-distance road trips, the GV90 has a maximum cruising range of 311 miles, or 500 kilometers. Although this figure is slightly lower than domestic competing models such as the Cadillac Escalade IQ, the GV90 is more competitive in terms of charging speed. When using a 350kW DC fast charging pile, it only takes 22 minutes to charge the vehicle from 10% to 80%.
GV90's technology configuration is very rich, including the active rear-wheel steering system that is standard on all series. The maximum steering angle of the rear axle can reach 5 degrees, which helps to improve the vehicle's control flexibility and low-speed maneuverability.
When the vehicle is parked, the front seats can be electronically rotated so that they face the rear passengers, making the interior of the car a layout similar to a social space. The interior floor is made of wood and equipped with floor heating. While waiting for the vehicle to charge, occupants can watch movies on the 24-inch OLED cinema screen that rises from the dashboard, or use the 25-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system with Dolby Atmos. A variety of high-end materials are also used inside the cabin, from natural cashmere to real stone veneers.
At a time when large American car companies are mainly relying on stacking larger-capacity batteries to alleviate battery life anxiety, Genesis has chosen to bet in another direction: future high-end consumers may value design, driving dynamics and unique luxury experiences more.
By combining groundbreaking engineering with hospitality inspired by Korean culture, Genesis isn't just part of the electric vehicle transition. The launch of GV90 marks the brand’s official handover of its most important flagship product to date.
