Hardware performance is seriously limited. Former Rockstar senior developer bluntly stated that it is not easy to launch "GTA 6" on Nintendo Switch 2.

Abstract:

The topic of whether the high-profile open world masterpiece "Grand Theft Auto 6" (GTA 6) will be ported to Nintendo's upcoming next-generation handheld console (tentatively called Switch 2) has recently sparked heated discussions in the gaming industry. Ben Hinchliffe, a former senior animator who has worked for Rockstar Games for a long time, made it clear in an exclusive interview that porting "GTA 6" to the Switch 2 platform "completely makes no sense in terms of business and technical logic."

Hinckley, who has been deeply involved in the early development of "GTA 5", "Red Dead Redemption 2" and "GTA 6", analyzed that "GTA 6" is a super-generation work that Rockstar has devoted all its resources to deeply customize for the latest flagship consoles (such as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X). The game not only pushes the limits of computing power in terms of physics engine, light and shadow rendering, NPC complex artificial intelligence, and massive same-screen data processing, its underlying architecture is completely designed based on high-performance desktop-level hardware.

Even if Nintendo's next-generation console achieves a significant leap in chip performance, it is still essentially a mobile portable device limited by size, heat generation and power consumption. Its hardware specifications are expected to be only close to or slightly better than the previous generation PlayStation 4, and are far from being able to meet the stringent requirements of "GTA 6" for system memory bandwidth and general processing capabilities.

Hinckley added that in order to shoehorn such an extremely large and complex open world game into a mobile handheld platform, the development team would have to make drastic and irreversible cuts in graphic textures, geometric details, density of people on the same screen and even the physical destruction system. This kind of crippling castration will not only completely destroy the immersion and visual spectacle carefully created by the development team, but will also fail to meet the strict quality benchmarks set by Rockstar for top flagship works.

In addition to hardware-level flaws, business return rate is also a key obstacle. Hinckley pointed out that undertaking such an extreme and technically impossible transplant requires the efforts of hundreds of engineers and huge R&D funds. However, the core audience profile of Nintendo consoles does not completely coincide with the core player group of "GTA 6" who are extremely sensitive to hardware performance.

Faced with the high cost of porting and the risk of shrinking image quality that may lead to a collapse in reputation, it is obviously a more commercially certain choice for Rockstar to focus on mainstream next-generation consoles and future PC versions. Therefore, players should not have any unrealistic illusions about the game being launched on Nintendo’s new platform.
