Microsoft confirms that Office components such as Word may crash or become unresponsive due to system updates

📅 2026-09-16

Abstract:

Microsoft has recently confirmed a known system issue affecting the Windows platform: after installing a specific security update, when users start Microsoft Office components such as Word, Excel, or PowerPoint through some third-party applications or call associated documents, they may experience the application crashing without any error prompts, freezing, or being completely unable to open.

According to the technical support announcement and issue tracking instructions issued by Microsoft, the main cause of the failure is related to the cross-application data interaction mechanism based on OLE automation or COM interface at the bottom of the system. When external professional software attempts to call the Office core process for document automation, background rendering, or data transfer, the process may not be able to establish a normal handshake, causing the Office application to become unresponsive and exit unexpectedly.

The external programs affected by this problem cover mainstream tools in multiple industries, including academic document management software Zotero, financial and tax audit tools CCH Engagement and Workpaper Manager, and medical and dental management software Dentrix and Softdent. In the workflow of these software, users usually need to frequently export with one click or call Word documents and tables in the background. However, affected by this bug, the automated process has been extensively interrupted.

Microsoft said it is continuing to investigate the compatibility issue and advancing a fix. Before the official fix patch is fully pushed or deployed, officials recommend that affected users who encounter this problem temporarily avoid directly evoking documents through third-party programs, and instead adopt a manual alternative, that is, first independently launch Office applications such as Word, and then manually locate and open the corresponding document through the software's built-in file menu. For affected enterprise IT management departments, Microsoft has opened an enterprise support channel to provide phased mitigation guidance, and subsequent cumulative updates containing complete fixes will be distributed to all affected systems through the regular Windows update channel.
