Microsoft tests store version of Windows Settings app Project Odeon, control panel retirement date still undecided

📅 2026-10-16

Abstract:

Microsoft is testing a Microsoft Store app called Project Odeon. The program uses icons and interface similar to Windows 11 Settings, and Microsoft has not yet publicly introduced the project. After installing and testing it in a Windows 11 Insider preview virtual machine, the report author found that it ran in parallel with the system's built-in "settings" and did not replace existing applications.

Odeon is listed in the store as Microsoft Corporation as the publisher and marked as a preview; the installation package is named Microsoft.ProjectOdeon, version number is 1.0.9.0, and requires Windows 11 26100 or later. Testing also requires turning on developer mode. The program can read information such as computer name, network status, and Windows updates to be installed, but some pages are still rough, and some device information is inconsistent with the system "Settings" display. It also includes a hidden preview mode where accounts, computer configurations, and personalization options are simulated data and do not change actual system settings.

Judging from the installation package file name, Odeon includes auxiliary components such as accounts, printers, startup items, time zones, uninstalling updates, and renaming computers.

The report speculates that Microsoft may be testing a method in which a store application provides an interface and then calls an auxiliary program to perform system operations; however, the name of the file itself does not prove Microsoft's future product plans, and there is no evidence at this stage that it will replace the complete system "Settings" application, or that it will be released to ordinary users soon.

If some settings pages can be updated independently through the Microsoft Store in the future, Microsoft may not have to wait for a complete Windows feature update to push interface improvements. Microsoft support documents confirm that store apps can be automatically updated; however, this is only a potential advantage and does not mean that Odeon has currently undertaken system settings updates.

Windows design leader March Rogers previously stated that the team is gradually migrating the settings in the old control panel into the modern "Settings" application, but the migration requires careful handling of network and printer device and driver compatibility issues, and Microsoft has not yet given a completion timetable. Therefore, Project Odeon is currently more like an internal or early testing project, and it cannot be concluded that the Windows Control Panel is about to be phased out at an accelerated pace.
