Mozilla officially released Firefox 157, bringing the most significant interface update to this open source browser in recent years. It also made many improvements in video calling, HDR display, and media playback experience. The most notable change in this update is the new “Nova” interface. Mozilla calls it Firefox's "biggest visual refresh in years." The new design re-modernizes the top frame, sidebar and menu system of the browser, making the overall style more unified and further optimizing the visual hierarchy and operating experience.
In addition to interface adjustments, Firefox 157 also introduces hardware AV1 decoding support for WebRTC video calls for the first time.
In the past, Firefox always relied on software decoding when processing AV1 videos in WebRTC scenarios, that is, the CPU was responsible for the relevant work. In the latest version, compatible devices can already call dedicated hardware units to complete AV1 decoding tasks, thereby reducing processor load and expected to improve power consumption and performance in video conferencing scenarios.
In terms of multimedia experience, Firefox 157 also fixes HDR video-related issues.
Previously, some HDR videos were unable to correctly present high dynamic range effects in certain environments, affecting the display quality. The new update fixes related issues to improve the HDR content playback experience.
For online video users, Mozilla has also improved the audio and video synchronization problem after adjusting the video playback speed.
In past versions, synchronization errors between audio and video sometimes occurred when users frequently switched playback speeds. Firefox 157 has optimized this to enable media content to maintain more stable synchronization performance at different playback speeds.
At the same time, Mozilla has also adjusted the list of built-in search engines in the browser.
According to the latest arrangement, Amazon is no longer one of the default search engines in Firefox. If users still want to use the Amazon search function in the future, they can add it manually through customization.
Analysts believe that although Firefox 157 does not introduce disruptive new features, it is a relatively important version upgrade in recent years. In particular, the launch of the Nova interface marks that Mozilla is reshaping the visual image of Firefox to cope with the increasing competitive pressure from Chrome, Edge and other modern browsers.
With the simultaneous implementation of WebRTC hardware AV1 decoding, HDR repair, and interface modernization, Firefox 157 has been improved to varying degrees in terms of performance, experience, and visual design.
