NASA selects Blue Origin to build Mars communications network

Abstract:

NASA officially awarded Blue Origin a contract on Tuesday to build the agency's next-generation "Mars Telecommunications Network." This new system is designed to provide stable, high-bandwidth communication and navigation services for current and future Mars missions.

This contract, which is a fixed-price contract with a maximum potential value of approximately US$700 million, requires Blue Origin to deliver a high-performance Mars communications relay satellite to NASA no later than December 31, 2028.


As part of NASA's broader space communications and navigation infrastructure, Blue Origin will be responsible for the design, development, integration, launch and operation of the network. The overall architecture of the system will consist of a high-performance communications satellite orbiting Mars, used to transmit scientific data, image data, navigation information and mission-critical communication content to spacecraft orbiting Mars and working on the surface of Mars.

This award marks an important step in NASA’s strategy to expand communications and navigation services beyond the Earth-Moon system and to Mars. It also lays the foundation for continued Mars exploration in the next few decades.

Preparing for the growing demand for Mars exploration

Under the framework of the Artemis program, NASA is sending astronauts to the moon to explore and prepare for future manned missions to Mars. Before that, robotic exploration missions will take the lead in paving the way for human exploration of the red planet. As the number of related tasks continues to increase, the demand for data transmission capabilities will continue to rise. To meet this need, NASA is building a communications network specifically designed to support a growing number of missions while providing greater capacity, greater reliability, and greater operational flexibility.

The decision to select Blue Origin was made after NASA issued the relevant request for proposals (RFP) in May this year. As NASA increasingly relies on commercial partners to provide transportation and communication services in Earth orbit and participate in the construction of lunar bases, the "Mars Communication Network" project also continues this idea: using the capabilities of private enterprises, NASA can focus more on exploration itself and scientific discovery.

The network will be coordinated and managed by NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) project and is expected to be operational on Mars in 2030. It will then provide support for current and upcoming Mars missions and help NASA move deeper into space.
