According to Amazon’s latest CPU sales rankings for September, Intel’s most popular processor in the retail market is not the latest Arrow Lake Refresh architecture product, but the “veteran” Core i7-14700K that has been released for nearly three years.
According to Amazon US site data, the i7-14700K is currently ranked 14th on the list and is the highest-ranking Intel chip. In the UK site, the i7-14700KF without core display has even entered the top ten.
The core logic of the i7-14700K's ability to achieve "anti-kill" under the siege of the new architecture lies in its extremely high platform compatibility. The processor can support both DDR4 and DDR5 memory.
This means that old users can upgrade to cheaper DDR4 memory without having to spend the expensive DDR5 memory cost like purchasing the latest Ultra series.
In addition, i7-14700K is also compatible with mature LGA1700 interface motherboards. Compared with the LGA1851 interface, which currently has an uncertain future, users have a stronger sense of return on investment on the old platform.
In terms of specification balance, the i7-14700K has 20 cores (8 performance cores + 12 energy efficiency cores), with an acceleration frequency of up to 5.5GHz. Compared with the flagship i9-14900K, its price is only 310.99 pounds (about 2886 yuan). Not only is it more cost-effective, but its heat control under high load is also easier to be suppressed by air cooling or mainstream water cooling than the i9 that pursues extreme frequencies.
Taken together, the continued hot sales of i7-14700K reflects the return of rationality among current hardware players: rather than blindly pursuing expensive new interfaces and new memory, compatibility and cost-effectiveness are still the primary productivity in the DIY market.
