Abstract:
Tesla is preparing for mass production of the humanoid robot Optimus. According to one observer, construction of the main structure of Tesla's Optimus dedicated production line in Texas, USA, is nearing completion, which may be a key breakthrough for the business.
Drone video posted by observer Joe Tegtmeyer on Thursday afternoon showed that the steel structure assembly of the Optimus production line is currently about five column grids away from reaching the perimeter beams on the north side of the building, which means that about six months after Tesla broke ground on the North Campus in late March, the main frame has entered the final stage.
At the same time, concrete pouring work on the three floors of the factory has begun, while construction workers are also laying steel bars on the ground and pouring ground beam foundations.
This method of parallel construction, with the steel structure erected at one end of the site and the concrete set at the other end, is the scheduling method Tesla used in the original Texas Gigafactory, and it appears to be the method used this time to save time before the factory is scheduled to open in 2027.
Optimus project status
Tesla officially announced the start of the Optimus production project in May this year. It is also part of the Texas Gigafactory expansion project. It is reported that the total length after the expansion will be close to the length of Tesla's existing vehicle factory, which is expected to exceed 4,000 feet, but the width will be slightly narrower.
Musk has set a long-term production goal of reaching 10 million Optimus units per year once the production line is at full capacity. This output will far exceed Tesla's separate 1 million-unit pilot production line at its Fremont, California, factory.
The Optimus Fremont factory has started mass production of third-generation robots in January this year. It is expected to produce tens of thousands of products this year. It will mainly be used to collect actual data needed to improve the robot software before Tesla goes into full production at the Texas Super Factory.
Another large-scale construction project in the Texas factory is Terafab, the chip project jointly owned by Tesla and SpaceX. Terafab will eventually provide silicon chips for the Optimus robots, and concentrating robot assembly and chip production on the same campus is intended to reduce shipping and delivery cycles that would otherwise have to span the two locations.
